31/01/2008    A Phone Book That's Always With You

The idea of building this citywide telephone directory into a mobile phone occured to me in the spring of 2005. This was the time when Macromedia had just created the first version of Flash Player Lite, when the Japanese group NTT DoCoMo had just produced the first applications of Flash Player Lite for mobile phone, and when Nokia, foreseeing the huge potential use of mobile phone Flash technology, entered into a strategic partnership with Macromedia.
Our first version of a city telephone directory appeared in that same year, but owing to technological restrictions and to the very limited quantity of phones having preinstalled Flash Players, the directory could not attain very wide user distribution. Our company completed a second version of our telephone directory program on the basis of Flash Player Lite 2 in the summer of 2007. By then, the number of mobile phones with preinstalled Flash Player Lite 2.0 had increased substantially, and it has continued to increase until today it is possible to talk seriously about the widespread introduction of city telephone directories for mobile phones.

27/12/2007    Why Two Variants Of This Site?

It was as long ago as 1996, when I was engaged in the development of software for the learning and testing systems of Ivanovo Power University, that we received, among the new computers and "legal" software products paid by a USA government grant, the software "Director". This was a program from Macromedia, a company which was almost unknown in Russia at that time. I began to experiment with "Director", waiting for an opportunity to apply cutting edge Flash approaches to web site construction. In 2001 in the USA I developed a 100 % Flash-site for the company Kathryn Quinn Architects Ltd in Chicago. A special feature of this project was that the designers of the company (who previously had worked only with printed graphics), provided me with sketches of future "screenshots", which I suppoused to integrate into interactive web site. This was noteworthy, I believe, because at that time there were not any small scale or mid scale businesses located in Chicago which had 100 % Flash sites.
Other Flash work followed until, in 2004, I began to create the first information resource for the city of Ivanovo. I already was an experienced "flashier" so for me there was no question as to which technology to use for this project. However, the Russian market presented its own particular issues. Computers with preloaded Flash players were not as widespread as they are now. In addition, some system administrators were reluctant about working with Flash files, based on the idea that they would increase company download costs. In response to this concern, I created and launched an HTML variant of the site in 2005, thus providing the user with a choice between media and also with the opportunity to compare media costs for themselves. Although this HTML version now contains innovative Web 2.0 features, it still satisfies the demand for "good, old" HTML of loyal HTML fans.
